Information About Gangotri
Gangotri, (Ganga' + ’Uttari’ which means descended) the picturesque
pilgrimage in the hinterlands of the Himalayas is the most sacred spot where
Ganga , the stream of life, touched earth for the first time.
Gangotri, the source of the river Ganges and seat of the goddess Ganga, is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, which is a 40 km trek from Gangotri.
According to mythology, Goddess Ganga - the daughter of heaven, manifested herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries. Lord Shiva received into his matted locks to minimize the immense impact of her fall. She came to be called Bhagirathi at her legendary source.
The Ganges is considered the most sacred river in India. The legend is that the Goddess Ganga descended on Earth from heaven at Gangotri and so the Gangotri is considered as Source of Ganges. There is a temple at Gangotri dedicated to Mother Ganges. The actual source of The Ganges likes 19 km from Gangotri at Gaumukh. The trek follows the river upstream to the actual source at Gaumukh. The tour starts from the holy city of Rishikesh , known as 'Gateway to Himalayas'. This exiting trek offers fantastic view of beautiful mountains like Shivling (6543 m) , Meru and Bhagirathi group of mountains.
By Rail :Gangotri does not have a rail station of its own. The nearest rail station is located in Haridwar, which linked to cities like Kolkata (Howrah), Mumbai, Delhi and Lucknow.
By Road : The best option to reach Gangotri is by road. A network of roads connects Gangotri to Rishikesh, which is again linked to Dehradun, Delhi.
