Day 2. Delhi - Rishikesh (356 m/6 hrs):
Early morning drive to Rishikesh takes about 6 hrs. Rishikesh is one of the
best located pilgrimage centres along the Ganges. It has been a holy place
of pilgrimage since time immemorial, with sages and ascetics making their
way here to pay homage to the great Mother Ganga enroute to the pilgrim sights
further north in the Himalaya. According to the tradition, Lord Rama and his
brother Lakshman stopped over here after slaying the demon Ravana. The town
grew around the Bharat Mandir which was erected on the site at which Lord
Vishnu appeared to two Rishis-a father and son - who had impressed the God
with their intense veneration. The town lies at 356 mtrs, only 24kms north
of Haridwar, and is surrounded by forested hills on three sides.
Arrive and check into hotel. Evening, visit the holy town and attend the evening
aarti (Hindu worship) ceremony at Triveni Ghat on the Ganges. You can also
visit the Lakshman Jhula Temple. Overnight in hotel.
Day 3. Rishikesh - Uttarkashi (1160 m/6 hrs) :
After breakfast, drive to Uttarkashi (about 6hrs.). The pilgrim town of Uttarkashi
is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi. The town is famous for its Shiva
temples, including the Vishwanath temple, to the north of the town, which
is an important place of pilgrimage for Hindu devotees. The famous Himalayan
Mountaineering Institute is also here. Overnight in guest house.
Day 4. Uttarkashi-Gangotri (3050M/6 hrs):
After breakfast, drive to Gangotri. Following the surging river upstream,
the road winds up the valley, past the hot sulphar springs at Ganganani, and
continues steeply through a series of hairpin bends to the village of Sukki.
The road then descends into the wide and picturesque Harsil Valley, rich with
walnut, apple and deodar trees. Here the river changes character dramatically,
flowing placidly through this idyllic valley. Immediately thereafter, it resumes
its former character and flows as a ferocious torrent, through the deep river-cut
gorge. Soaring Himalayan peaks play 'hide and seek' all the way to Gangotri.
Evening, explore this sacred pilgrimage place including the temple of the
goddess Ganga on the right bank of the river. Overnight in guest house.
Day 5, Gangotri - Bhojbasa (3792 M/ 6 -7 hrs) :
Morning, an easy walk to Bhojbasa via Chirbasa (3350 M). The wide trail initially
passes through dense deodar forests before emerging into a wide unforested
valley. It then carries on to a small isolated pine forest at Chirbasa. Continuing
along the pilgrim route, the trail leads us out of the forest, across grassy
hill sides to Bhojbasa. Overnight in tents.
Day 6. Bhojbasa - Gaumukh (3890 m/2 hrs) :
Morning continue walking to Gaumukh (about 4hrs.) Gaumukh, (cow's mouth) at
the base of the Bhagirathi peaks is the actual source of the holy river Ganges.
Here the crystal waters of the Ganga gushes out of the snout of the vast Gangotri
glacier. The mighty Shivling (6543 M) towers above, looking down like an old
learned man, while the Bhagirathi I, II & III peaks tower above. Overnight
in tents.
Day 7. Gaumukh-Tapovan (4450 m/3-4 hrs.):
The trail weaves its way through the terminal moraine before cutting across
the Gangotri glacier and climbing steeply up the grassy slopes to the huge
ablation valley of Tapovan. The vast meadows, strewn with wild flowers are
situated at the base of Shivling. The Bhagirathi peaks are now almost within
touching distance. Camp is set in the heart of high mountain country for 3
nights.
Day 8. Tapovan - Kirti Bamak and back:
A full days walk to the Kirti Bamak (glacier) and the base - Kedarnath Dome
(6850 M) and Kirti Stambh (6500 M). We also have a magnificent view of Shivling
from the east. Return to camp.
Day 9. Tapovan- Meru Glacier and back (4800 M) :
Another full days walk crossing the meadows of Tapovan, the trail climbs into
another beautiful valley, which leads us to the base of Mt Meru (6400 M) -
yet another of the spectacular Garhwal peaks, it's mythical name being "The
Mountain of Gold".
Day 10. Tapovan- Nandanvan (4570m / 7 –8 hrs.):
This day is largely an exercise of boulder hopping, where we cross the moraine
covered Gangotri glacier to Nandanvan, located at the confluence of the Chaturangi
and the Gangotri glaciers. Literally meaning the 'four colored glaciers',
the Chaturangi is truly multihued. The massive meadows of Nandanvan are situated
at the base of the Bhagirathi massif (6850 M), (6510 M) & (6450 M). The
area provides excellent sightings of bharal (blue sheep). Overnight in tents.
Day 11. Nandanvan-Vasuki tal (4800 M):
A full day walk to the picturesque Vasuki - Tal lake. The trail follows a
grassy ridge running parallel to the Chaturangi glacier, across a small glacier
eroded valley to Vasuki Tal. It then continues along the lateral moraine of
the Chaturangi with spectacular views of Mount Satopanth. Return to camp at
Nandanvan.
Day 12. Nandanvan - Gaumukh (6-7 hrs):
Another boulder hop along the Gangotri glacier to its snout at Gaumukh.
Day 13. Gaumukh-Gangotri-Uttarkashi:
Retracing our steps to Gangotri takes about 7 hrs. The drive to Uttarkashi
takes about 4 hrs. The town is pleasantly sited on the banks of Bhagirathi
River, drawing pilgrims to its Vishwanath Temple, sacred to Lord Shiva. Overnight
in guest house.
Day 14. Uttarkashi - Mussoorie (2006 m/205 km):
Morning drive to Mussoorie takes about 7 hrs. Afternoon, free to stroll in
Mussoorie - a famous hill station in India. Mussoorie was founded by an Irish
man, Capt. Young, who stumbled upon the 15 kms long reach (on which the town
was later sited) in 1827 while out enjoying a spot of hunting. He immediately
recongnised the potential of the site with its salubrious climate and magnificent
mountain views. Overnight in the hotel.
Day 15. Mussoorie - Delhi (285 Km):
Morning drive to Delhi takes about 8hrs. Arrive and check in the hotel for
